"Humans of Sunnybank made racism cool & acceptable, please don't shut it down" lament Aussie fans of dying Facebook page

Sunnybank, QUEENSLAND—Fans of dying Facebook page, Humans of Sunnybank, reminisce the shortlived days when being racist towards Asians on social media became "the cool thing to do".

Founded in July 2015, Humans of Sunnybank (HOS) took the Brisbane community by storm when it emerged as the most popular not-for-profit Australian Facebook page in the 2015 Social Media Community Choice Awards.

It came as a complete surprise, even to those who voted for HOS, that a page brimming with racially offensive content could receive such positive public recognition.

"Only in America Australia," said Dr Jeremiah Benson PhD, Associate Professor of Sociology at South-east Queensland University.

The page's popularity grew by 5,000 fans in its launch weekend, doubling Pauline Hanson's peak Twitter follower count to-date, prompting the well-loved politician to express her disgust on social media.

Despite its early success, HOS has seen a recent decline in quality and quantity of its posts—but fans of the page are urging its creator to not give up.

"I loved how Humans of Sunnybank gave me the chance to be casually racist towards Asians, without the commitment of having to get a Southern Cross tattoo—'try before you buy', so to speak," said Johnathan 'Jonno' Higgins, a lifelong Logan resident.

"Please keep posting, don't give up."
